How to Ask for No Strings Attached: Messages to Borrow
When to say it, three tones to choose from, what to ask back and how to take a no with grace.
Ask early, plainly and kindly. Say you want something casual with no exclusivity, in your own words and ideally before the first date, then ask what they want and take the answer at face value. A clear message beats a clever one, and a no is a complete answer.
When should you say it?
Sooner than feels comfortable. Brook, the UK sexual health charity, says to be honest and upfront about what you want, even before the first date. That is kinder than letting someone find out on the third date.
On a site like this your profile does half the work: tags such as Available This Weekend and Private Meets say a lot before you type a word, and no strings attached dating explains how members use them. Messaging comes with a paid membership, and the features page shows each level.
Sample messages
Pick the tone that sounds like you
Treat these as scaffolding, not scripts. Swap in your own details, because a message that could go to anyone reads like it did.
Direct
For someone you already talk to.
I'll be straight with you, because I'd rather be clear than clever. I like your company and I'm not after anything serious. If you want to see each other now and then, no strings, I'm in. If not, no hard feelings.
Before this goes further, a couple of things. I want something casual, nothing exclusive, and I'd want us to talk about protection first. Where are you at?
Light
For banter that is already going well.
Fair warning: I'm good company, I'm around on Thursday and I'm not auditioning to be anyone's everything. Drink?
My calendar is light and my weekends are for fun. If yours looks the same, let me buy you a drink and we'll see where the night goes. No pressure, no plot.
A first message on a dating site
For a profile you have just opened.
You've got Video Chat ticked, which I like. Could we do ten minutes on camera first and then decide about meeting? I'm after something casual, nothing exclusive.
Your profile made me laugh twice, which is rare. I'll be honest about my side: casual, no strings, and somewhere public to start. Does that suit you?
Your turn to listen
Four questions to ask them back
Saying what you want is half of it. The other half is asking what they want, and meaning it.
Are you seeing other people?
Brook says to agree where you both stand before sex. Answer first yourself, so it feels like a swap, not an interview.
How do you feel about protection?
Brook says to raise condoms early: ask plainly whether they use them, or say you will. The safer sex guide covers testing.
How often would you want to meet?
Once, now and then, or whenever you are both around. All fine, but they are different answers.
What happens if either of us wants to stop?
Agree now that either of you can end it with one honest message and no long explanation.
How do you read their answer?
A yes
A yes is specific. They answer your questions, suggest a time and say what they want back. Match it: confirm the plan and repeat the terms in a line.
A maybe
A maybe is vague: "we'll see" or "it depends". Treat it as not yet. Ask one clear question, give them a day and do not push. A maybe that never becomes a yes is a no.
A no
A no can be polite, blunt or silent, and all three are complete answers. Thank them if they replied, then stop. No second ask, no "just checking in".
A yes can change. Brook says agreeing to one thing is not agreeing to another, and the NHS says consent can be withdrawn at any time. A yes to a message is a yes to the conversation, not to anything beyond it.
How to take a no and leave well
Reply once, keep it warm and close the chat.
Fair enough, and thanks for being honest. Take care.
Asking again, asking why or bargaining is pushing, and nobody should do it to you either: if someone will not take your no, block and report them. The safety page lists the tools. If it was a yes, the no strings attached rules keep it easy, and what no strings attached means helps if you need to explain the idea.
Asking questions, answered
How do you tell someone you want something casual?
Say it once, plainly and early, in your own words: you enjoy their company, you are not looking for anything serious, and you would like to keep seeing each other if they feel the same. Then ask what they want and accept the answer, whichever way it goes.
What should a first message on a dating site say?
Mention something from their profile so it is clear you read it, then say in a sentence what you are after. Keep it short and end with a question that is easy to answer. Save the finer terms for when they reply.
Is it rude to ask for no strings attached?
Not if you ask kindly and take the answer as given. What is rude is hinting and hoping, or pressing after a no. A clear question gives the other person a fair chance to say yes or no, and that is a form of respect.
What if they say no?
Thank them for being honest, then stop. A no is a complete answer, so do not ask again, bargain or ask for a reason. A line wishing them well is plenty. If the roles are reversed and someone will not take your no, block and report them.
