Meaning and NSA
What Does No Strings Attached Mean?
The dating meaning, the dictionary meaning, what NSA stands for and where the film fits in.
No strings attached means no conditions and no obligations. In dating, it describes sex or a casual meet-up where neither person expects exclusivity, a future or a promise to stay in touch. NSA is its shorthand. It is also the name of a US intelligence agency, which has nothing to do with dating.
Which meaning did you come for?
Search no strings attached or NSA and you get a dictionary entry, a dating habit, a film and a government agency. Here is who is who.
- In general
- Without conditions or restrictions. Dictionary.com, quoting American Heritage Idioms, gives that meaning, and Cambridge Dictionary describes the general use as an offer with nothing expected back.
- In dating
- Cambridge Dictionary lists a second sense: a sexual or dating arrangement in which nobody expects it to last, or expects to be the only partner. In plain terms, no exclusivity, no future, no promises.
- NSA, in dating
- Short for no strings attached, and one of six meanings Dictionary.com lists for the letters. On a profile, it says what you are after in three letters.
- NSA, the agency
- The US National Security Agency, a government intelligence body formed in 1952. It has no link to dating; only the letters match.
Is it the film you mean?
Ivan Reitman directed No Strings Attached, a comedy starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher that opened in the US on 21 January 2011. Two friends agree to keep things purely physical, and the deal is tested when feelings develop.
That is why the film and the dating idea get tangled: same title, same premise, easy to land on the wrong one. The film is one story told for laughs. A real arrangement is whatever two adults agree, out loud, before anything starts.
Where did the phrase come from?
Dictionary.com dates the phrase to the mid-1900s and the sense of string as a limit to the late 1800s. A string in that sense is a condition, so no strings means nothing limits you.
- 1800slate in the century, string comes to mean a limit
- 1900smid-century, the phrase appears
- 1952the US National Security Agency is formed, an unrelated NSA
- 2011a film takes the phrase as its title
Tidy origin stories circulate online, but none is settled.
How is it different from a one night stand?
No dictionary sets these three phrases side by side, so this is our plain reading of their definitions, not a quote from one.
| No strings attached | One night stand | Friends with benefits | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it describes | Nobody expects it to last or to be exclusive | One sexual encounter that is not repeated | Sex with a friend, with no plan to become a couple |
| How many meetings | One or many, as you agree | One | Several, on and off |
| Who it is with | A friend or someone new | Anyone | A friend you already know |
The edges blur. A one night stand can be a no strings meeting, and so can a regular arrangement with a friend. The phrase describes the terms, not the number of nights.
Natsal-3 questioned 15,162 adults aged 16 to 74 across Britain in 2010 to 2012 and reported in The Lancet in 2013 that 20% of men and 13% of women saw nothing wrong with one night stands. That is attitudes, not behaviour.
Casual never means careless
On a site like this, no strings attached describes what you are not promising each other: exclusivity, a future, a standing invitation. It never describes cutting corners on respect, protection or consent.
- Respect. A straight answer and a kind goodbye cost nothing.
- Protection. The NHS says a condom used correctly every time is the best defence for you and a partner against HIV and other STIs. Our safer sex guide covers testing too.
- Consent. Agreeing to meet is not agreeing to sex, and either of you can stop at any point.
The no strings attached rules turn that into habits, and how to ask for no strings attached gives you the words. On No Strings Dating, interest tags such as Short-term Fun, Ready Now and Open to Whatever show what members want. No strings attached dating explains how it works here, and the features page lists what each level includes.
Meaning questions, answered
What does no strings attached mean in dating?
Two adults meet for sex or company without promising each other anything beyond the time itself: no exclusivity, no shared future. Cambridge Dictionary lists this beside the general sense, an offer with nothing expected back, so it is the same idea applied to people.
What does NSA mean?
In dating, NSA means no strings attached, one of six meanings Dictionary.com lists for the letters. Outside dating it is the US National Security Agency, formed in 1952. Context tells you which: on a dating profile it is the first, in a news story about intelligence it is the other.
Is no strings attached the same as a one night stand?
Not quite. A one night stand is a single sexual encounter that is not repeated. No strings attached describes the terms rather than the number of meetings, so it can be one night or an arrangement that carries on, provided both people expect no promises and no exclusivity.
Is no strings attached the same as friends with benefits?
They overlap, but friends with benefits starts from an existing friendship and means sex with that friend, without dating. No strings attached needs no friendship at all: you can meet someone new on those terms, provided you both say clearly that nobody is promising anything more.
